It was a Tuesday morning, 9:15 a.m.
The large glass-walled room on the third floor was filled with a bright, cold light. The neon lights buzzed, coffee cups piled up on the table.
Sofiane, 52, in a perfectly tailored dark blazer, opened the file for the weekly meeting.
Across from him sat Lina, 24—a Gen Z in all her glory: direct gaze, laptop covered in colorful stickers, earbuds still tucked into her pocket.

The tension was palpable.
He spoke in KPIs, processes, profitability.
She answered with impact, balance, flexibility.

Sofiane repeated: “In this company, discipline comes before everything else.”
Lina dared to reply: “But if it doesn’t make sense, what’s the point of discipline?”

Around them, the team held its breath, weary.

Then came a Thursday, 1:07 p.m., in an almost empty cafeteria.
Lina sat alone, tray in front of her, eyes lost in her phone.
Sofiane walked by, hesitated, then sat down across from her.

An awkward silence, broken only by the ticking of the wall clock.
Then, almost in a whisper, Lina said:

“You know, Sofiane… I admire you. You endured, you built. But me… I don’t want to survive my job. I want to live while working.”

Sofiane said nothing.
Her words hit him like a slap—yet not a painful one.

A young graduate, full of dreams, with the same fire in his eyes as Lina.

And he did.

Looking at Lina, he realized she wasn’t being insolent.
She was a reflection of who he had once been—before the system hardened him.
And instead of judging her, he felt a strange tenderness.

The truth is, Lina had to learn to speak Sofiane’s language.
But Sofiane, too, had to relearn how to hear the language of Gen Z—a language that is becoming more and more dominant, because whether we like it or not, they are the ones who will take over.
With their thirst for meaning, their boldness, their freedom.
