When Everything Falls Apart… and How Coaching Teaches Us to Bounce Back

São Vicente, Cape Verde. An island between sky and sea, where the wind caresses the cliffs and the ocean reveals its thousand shades of blue. Sarah and Adam had dreamed of this trip for months. With breathtaking dives and mesmerizing sunsets, everything seemed perfect… until the night played a cruel trick on them.

That evening, excited about the idea of hiking up the mountain trails at sunrise, they had carefully packed their backpacks. The route was mapped out, and adventure awaited. But when they woke up, shock hit them. Their bags were gone.

Thieves had broken into their room and taken much more than just a few belongings. Adam’s phone, his passport… everything had vanished. In an instant, their dream trip had turned into a logistical nightmare. Without a passport, returning to Paris was impossible. They needed to obtain an emergency travel document, which would take three days. Three long days of waiting, uncertainty, and frustration.

What if we went anyway?

Faced with the unexpected, they had two choices: collapse under the weight of anger and worry, or… keep living.

Sarah was the first to ask:

What if we did the hike anyway?

Adam hesitated. The idea of walking for hours while his mind was consumed by the fear of not getting his documents in time seemed absurd. But then again, staying at the hotel, dwelling on the unfairness of the situation, wouldn’t change anything.

So, they set off.

As they climbed the steep trails, the mountain unveiled a breathtaking spectacle. Wildflowers burst into vivid colors under the morning sun. The air was crisp, filled with the scents of cedar and damp earth. With each step, they distanced themselves a little more from their troubles, reminded that the present moment was always worth living, no matter the circumstances.

By the end of the day, the weight of anxiety had lifted. They returned to the hotel, exhausted but filled with a renewed energy. And just a few hours later, the consulate handed them the precious emergency travel document. Their flight the next day was saved.

The lesson?

Life is an unpredictable hike. Obstacles arise without warning, unexpected events throw our plans into disarray. But what truly matters isn’t what happens to us—it’s how we choose to respond.

That’s exactly what coaching is about: learning to see beyond the problem, tapping into our inner resources, and taking control of what we can. Adam and Sarah could have let stress overwhelm them, but they made a different choice: to move forward despite the uncertainty. And in doing so, they turned a setback into an unforgettable memory.

So, when life disrupts your plans, ask yourself this: What choice will allow me to fully live, despite everything?

Because sometimes, the most beautiful answer lies just on the other side of fear.
